Meet Bella - The Little Dog with a Big Heart (and a Heart-Shaped Patch!)

Bella’s story began in a field where she was found scared and underweight, but her journey since then has been truly inspiring. In foster care, she’s blossomed into a confident, playful, and loving little companion.

Bella is a pint-sized bundle of joy, estimated to be around 2 years old, with the energy and curiosity of a puppy. Life is still full of surprises for her—some thrilling and others a little overwhelming—but she approaches it all with a sweet, gentle spirit. Adding to her charm is a unique heart-shaped patch on her side, a perfect reflection of her loving nature.

Her dream? To find a forever home where she can be cuddled, cherished, and loved unconditionally. Bella thrives on affection and sticks close to her humans. She’s never shown aggression and is endlessly grateful for kindness.

Bella is currently living with four other dogs and would need canine companions in her new home. She gains confidence and learns how to be a dog by observing and playing with them—though she can be a bit of a rough-and-tumble playmate!

She’s made great strides in her training, learning basic commands like ‘sit’ and ‘wait’, and she’s attending obedience classes to keep improving. While her recall is getting better, she’s still on the lead for now and working on her pulling. She’s eager to learn, especially when it means spending time with her people.

Reasons for relinquishment

Bella was found straying in a field.

Energy Requirements

Bella has a lot of energy and behaves more like a puppy than a mature adult. She is on the go for a lot of the day but definitely needs to continue with her naps in the afternoon. It's easy to spot when she's tired in the evening as she gets overexcited.

Previous and current training

She came into foster with no training at all. She has learned how to sit, wait for her food and treats and where to toilet. She has now learned her new name (it was given to her when she was found) and she has started to come back to us in the garden when we call her. She is learning that leads and harnesses are not something to fear but will need ongoing care to embed this.

Bella has started going to obedience training and has practised lead walking. She did extremely well in the lesson - then pulled all the way to the car! She is also booked onto a recall workshop in the coming weeks.

Her new owners will need to be committed to continuing training Bella using only positive training techniques to ensure she develops into a polite and confident dog.

Meeting new people

Bella is a gentle friendly soul, but she can get a bit nervous when she meets new people (especially if they are tall) and tends to pull away from people if they scare her. She is much happier meeting new people who are sitting down.

Dog/Cat test

Bella is fantastic with dogs, although she does pull towards them on the lead when out walking but this is out of curiosity. She engages in proper dog play when she meets another like-minded dog and she can be quite boisterous for her tiny size. She's not at all intimidated by our 50kg German Shepherd!

Home Alone

Bella likes to be with us at all times if we are in the house, but she seems ok to be left with the other dogs for a while. She doesn't seem to be destructive (although she does like to chew toys, shoes, socks etc whether we are home or not)

Children

Bella has been stroked by a few children while we've been in coffee shops and shops with her - she copes very well and doesn't look scared (maybe because they are on her level) although we feel she would need to be with slightly older children who can understand that she will be scared if they squeal.

She still puppy nips when she gets over excited and if she is extremely tired, but this has reduced significantly since she's been in foster. This behaviour might increase short term when she moves into her forever home, but keeping calm around her until she has had time to settle should reduce this risk.

Vet visit

Bella has been to the vet twice and has behaved perfectly. She was cautious rather than scared but confident enough to sniff every corner of every room!

Medical Issues

Currently on antibiotic drops for a mild ear infection but this should have cleared by the time she moves to her forever home.

Travelling

Bella is super in the car. She sits nicely in the boot with the other spaniels when we go to the woods. If we are taking her somewhere by herself, she is very happy sitting on the back seat with her harness and seat belt on. She tends to go straight to sleep.

Handling/Grooming

Bella has recently been groomed as she is very neat. She likes to eat the grooming brush when we try to brush her as she thinks we're playing!

She can be touched anywhere without any problems at all.

Food

Bella is on Ava's sensitive stomach & skin dog food as she had quite loose stools when she first came into foster (although we think this was due to stress more than food)

Sleeping

Bella sleeps in our bed as she is a huge cuddle monster and wants to be with us if we're home. She doesn't like being in a crate and although we had one as a safe place for her when she first arrived, she wasn't comfortable going into it.

Behavioural Issues

Bella is pretty much the most perfect young dog - she doesn't have any behavioural issues although she does pull hard on her lead when in the woods. She is better if she's walking along the pavement - she's been practising lead walking in the obedience lessons.

Bite History

Bella is a very gentle, loving girl and has never aggressively bitten anyone. However, she does puppy nip when she gets over excited when she's playing although this has reduced significantly since she's been in foster placement.

Ideal Home

Bella’s ideal home is active and loving, with gentle owners who can invest time in her training and offer plenty of cuddles. No cats, please as chasing them is far too tempting!

If you’re looking for a tiny dog with a giant heart (and a heart-shaped patch to match), Bella is ready to be your best friend and lifelong companion. Could Bella be the one for you?
